Parkway Playhouse’s nationally recognized after-school performing arts program, Parkway Playhouse Junior, is now registering students between the ages of 4 and 18 for their fall session Performing Arts Production Classes.  Students enrolled in the program will have the opportunity to learn about creating a character, music and singing, movement, props, costumes, and successfully putting it all together to create a theatrical performance.  All of the students in production classes will perform in the final community performances of the production that they create in the class.  Classes are being offered in Burnsville, NC, and through a partnership with the Toe River Arts Council in Spruce Pine, NC. All classes will be led by professional teaching artists. More information and registration information  about the Fall Performing Arts Classes can be found on Parkway Playhouse’s website.

Students who are enrolled in the Burnsville sessions will produce Seussical Jr.- a rompish adaptation of multiple stories from the Dr. Seuss children’s stories.  Characters like Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, The Wickersham Brothers, the Sour Kangaroo, Yertle the Turtle, and of course, the ultra mischievous Cat-in-the-Hat are brought to vivid life in this silly mash up adapted from multiple books.  With a large cast, and many opportunities for students to develop imaginative and distinctive characters, students in this session will be divided by age.  Students between 4 and 10 will play the “Whos” and “Jungle of Nool” ensemble and will have rehearsal class starting on September 8 on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 4-5pm.  Advanced/older students between the ages of 10 and 18 will have rehearsal classes starting on August 16 (when they will audition for their roles) and will have class times on Mondays and Thursday from 5-6:30pm and Sundays from 2-5pm.

A select group of these students (selected by special consideration and audition) will also participate in the 2016 Junior Theater Festival Group at Parkway Playhouse Junior, where they will take 15 minutes of the Seussical, Jr. production and travel to Atlanta, GA over Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend with thousands of other performing arts students from all over the world!
