Improvisational comedy is a kind of performance that requires quick wits, vivid imagination, and a complete willingness to be silly. “Improv” is completely unscripted. Although there are many formats for creating sketches and scenes. Who’s Line Is It Anyway is an example of popular improvisation on television. There are comedy clubs and troupes across the nation that specialize in this high-energy brand of performance. Parkway Playhouse has now joined their ranks. Introducing Get the Hook- Parkway Playhouse’s new high school improv-comedy troupe.
The cast of Get the Hook includes Spencer Moore, Aneka Happer, Olivia Morgan, Olivia Hughes, Levi Bradford, Hana Stella, and Paloma Soto- all veterans of many Parkway Playhouse Junior production classes as well as being members of the High School Apprentice Program. Get the Hook is led by Parkway Playhouse Teaching Artist and General Manager, Kristen Livengood, who has an extensive background in improvisation.
Get the Hook made its debut in August 2015 with a fundraising performance for the Parkway Playhouse Junior program. They also dazzled at Parkway Playhouse’s end of season party in September.
The name, Get the Hook, has its roots in Vaudeville, where unruly acts had to be pulled off the stage with a long staff with a hook.
On November 13 and November 14 at 7:30pm they can bee seen at the Nu Wray Inn, in two performances at 7:30pm. Each performance is filled with improv-games and lots of interaction with the audience.
The troupe will be traveling to the North Carolina Comedy Festival in Februrary of 2016 and there will be more performances to look forward to from this group soon.
