Ready or not Christmas is coming. In Gloria Houston’s acclaimed Appalachian story The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree the year maybe 1918, but the anticipation for young Ruthie Green and her mother, Christmas cannot get here soon enough, as this is the year that their family will have the honor of providing the Pine Valley Grove Church’s Christmas Tree. In addition to this honor, Ruthie will also get to play the angel in the church’s annual Christmas pageant. Things become complicated when Ruthie’s father, who has been away in Europe fighting in World War I does not arrive as expected.
The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree is being jointly produced by Parkway Playhouse and Mountain Heritage High School’s Theatre Arts Class.
“The story and the collaboration is exciting” commented Parkway Playhouse Artistic Director, Andrew Gall. “Looking at Christmas through the eyes of a child who longs for her family to be made whole is a great way to connect to the spirit of the season. Gloria Houston is a legend that has given many people in our community such joy through her stories and teaching. We hope that the fans of the book will join us for a performance.”
