Camp Spotlight: Sofia as Wendy Darling & Meg as Peter Pan

It’s the first time on the Parkway Playhouse stage for both Sofia, who hails from Clayton, and Meg, from Weaverville. So, of course, we wanted to find out a little more about them and how they found us!

“My mom found out about the camp and signed me up!” Meg said, though they weren’t sure quite how they were going to make the rides work initially. A rising 10th grader, Meg is involved with the Performing Arts Academy at ACT and Elevate Life & Art  in Asheville.  “I also perform at my church, Gateway,” she said.

Meg thinks the music of the show is what audiences will love most. “The music is so fun and energetic,” she explained, “but even when it’s slower, you can really feel the emotions it it.”

If anything surprised Meg, she said it was the reception she received.  “Everyone was very welcoming!” she said and laughed. “I know that sounds cheezy, but I knew no one here.” Immediately, other campers brought her right in and the cast gelled.  Even the director has noted how unified the cast became right away.  “Everyone jumped in and was so ready to work,” Meg said.

One of those cast-mates is also new: Sofia,  a rising 9th grader who will play Wendy. “I’d hoped for the part,” she admitted, “but there were a lot of girls who tried out.” Sofia, whose parents have a mountain home, found out about the camp from a neighbor. Even though she didn’t have as much previous experience in drama, she decided to give it a try.  “I sing and play guitar,” she explained, but said that after one week of Peter Pan, Jr. camp she was “hooked” on musical theater.

We know you’ll also be hooked by these great student performers, so make plans to come see them this weekend.  Peter Pan Slider

Please note that the show begins at 6pm!

We know our typical Mainstage Shows begin at 7:30, so it might confuse you… but we wanted the performances to be early enough that it didn’t interfere with younger audience members’ bedtime routines.

And if any of you get hooked on musical theatre, our next show is a another musical filled with familiar songs and some great dancing!  You won’t want to miss Footloose!

Parkway Playhouse, located in the Appalachian town of Burnsville, NC, is a haven of theatre talent. While people come to the mountains to get away, Parkway Playhouse is a natural gathering place to connect. Likewise, we are an extension of traditional mountain talents: singing, dancing, and, foremost, storytelling. By giving rise to energetic new voices and through a wide variety of plays and musicals, we invite our audience into experiences that are thought-provoking, adventurous, and entertaining. Together we reimagine the world in every live performance, creating dynamic conversations that last far beyond the curtain call. This blog is will feature stories, helpful information, insight and features about the performances.
