Great Weekend for a Day Trip

If you need a beautiful way to usher in the season, we’d love to suggest a trip to Yancey and Mitchell Counties this weekend. No shopping-feeding-frenzy, but a soul-feeding over-the-river-and-through-the-woods kind of day.

First, it’s the annual Toe River Arts Holiday Studio Tour. For a complete list of participating artists, visit their website. Or check out their Facebook page which features fantastic photos and videos of the many artists. (Nice work, Mea.)

A self-guided tour, this adventure will lead you to some unique places situated between Mt. Mitchell and Roan Mountain. Visitors travel through valleys, past streams, across rivers, over hilltops, and experience breathtaking mountain vistas as they those many out-of-the-way studios. Meet the artists, see where they create and where they live.

We’ve got a lot of unique little coffee shops (Rescue Dog Cafe or App Java), eateries (Garden Deli, Ye Olde Country Store, or Rad Dawgz) and even our own brewery in the area, but honestly, the artists themselves often make cookies and nibblies they have sitting about at their studios.

Second, pick up a tree while you’re up in the mountains, too!  It’s one of our specialties.  Whether you get one along the road for $20 or visit one of the great choose-your-own farms (complete with hot chocolate and hay rides, like at Snow Creek Christmas Trees), you’re sure to make memories that will last longer than the needles will stay on the tree!

Third, well, we’ve got a show! Featuring our conservatory classes and other local talent, this variety show is sure to be a lot of fun.  Besides, it’s only $5 a person.

We’ve even got a few gift suggestions for you:

The notecards can be purchased at the box office or at Something Special Gift Shop in downtown Burnsville and the Flex-Passes can also be purchased at the box office this weekend.  Check out the great season coming next year!

Parkway Playhouse, located in the Appalachian town of Burnsville, NC, is a haven of theatre talent. While people come to the mountains to get away, Parkway Playhouse is a natural gathering place to connect. Likewise, we are an extension of traditional mountain talents: singing, dancing, and, foremost, storytelling. By giving rise to energetic new voices and through a wide variety of plays and musicals, we invite our audience into experiences that are thought-provoking, adventurous, and entertaining. Together we reimagine the world in every live performance, creating dynamic conversations that last far beyond the curtain call. This blog is will feature stories, helpful information, insight and features about the performances.
